Riverhead Police are seeking information in connection with a larceny from a vehicle parked at a residence on Herod Point Road overnight.
Police were called to the scene of the incident at about 2:41 a.m. today, when a 911 caller reported an unknown male attempting to remove items from a vehicle, according to a police press release.
A white SUV fled the scene upon arrival by police officers and a male fled on foot. A Riverhead Police K-9 unit subsequently located the man hiding in the exterior basement stairwell of a residence on Cliff Road West in Wading River.
Malachi Sweatte, 18, of Freeport was arrested for Trespass and later charged with three counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree (credit cards) and one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree (a N.Y. driver’s license.)
Sweatte was processed and held for arraignment at Riverhead Town Justice Court.
The investigation is active and ongoing by the Riverhead Police Detective Division. Any witnesses are urged to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500 or the department’s Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
