Members of the public visiting Veterans Memorial Park and the EPCAL site are advised by the Town of Riverhead to stay on the recreation trail and off the runways at all times and to stay out of the woods, where town-authorized bow-hunting for deer is now underway.
Members of the public should ensure that all pets also remain on the trail only.
The town posted a public safety advisory this week on its website.
The regular archery season on Long Island runs from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31.
Bow-hunting for deer takes place from Oct. 1 through Dec. 27 within designated areas of the Calverton Enterprise Park and at designated town-owned property on Sound Avenue, as well as at designated town-owned property on Middle Road from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31.
The bow-hunting program, overseen by the town’s Wildlife Management Advisory Committee, allows bow-hunting for deer on designated town-owned properties by town residents or property owners who have New York State deer hunting licenses, meet other requirements established by the program and have been selected in a lottery held by the committee.
