Riverhead Central School District’s athletics department is looking for memorabilia of past star athletes who went on to play professional sports or competed at the Olympics level after they left Riverhead High School.

Athletics Director Brian Sacks said he’d like to collect memorabilia such as jerseys worn by the players for a new permanent display outside the high school gymnasium.

The district doesn’t have much information on who among its past athletes went on to compete at the upper levels of their chosen sports, beyond college, Sacks said in an interview this week. He’d like to compile that information and collect memorabilia related to those athletes for a new display in one of the glass cases outside the gym.

Sacks said he’s looking for people willing to donate the items to the district — rather than loan them temporarily.

The display cases will be a great way to show off past athletic achievements of Riverhead alumni, Sacks said.

Riverhead High School has produced at least four football players that went on to pro careers: Ed Danowski, N.Y. Giants, 1934-1939 and 1941; Ted Wegert, Philadelphia Eagles, 1955-1956 & NY Titans, 1960; Scott Mesereau, N.Y. Jets, 1987-1993; and Ethan Greenidge, New Orleans Saints 2019-2022, Atlanta Falcons, 2023.
