Riverhead Town has extended the hours of operation at all town beaches today and tomorrow due to the excessive heat and high heat indices, Supervisor Tim Hubbard announced this afternoon.
In addition, all outdoor recreation activities and programs —except swimming lessons (in-water) and summer camp (moved indoors) — previously scheduled through the Riverhead Recreation Department for this afternoon and all day tomorrow are canceled and will be rescheduled.
Residents are encouraged to remain indoors in air-conditioned areas or outside in shaded environments and to limit outdoor activity during the heat of the day.
The Riverhead Senior Center on Shade Tree Lane will be open as a cooling center until 4:30 p.m. today and will reopen tomorrow at 9 a.m.
