A heat advisory continues today across much of Suffolk County, including Riverhead and the North Fork.
The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will produce heat indices up to 100º across the region and in the upper-90s locally, according to the National Weather Service in New York.
The extreme weather can cause heat-related illness. Residents are encouraged to remain indoors in air-conditioned areas or outside in shaded environments and to limit outdoor activity during the heat of the day, Riverhead Town Police said in an advisory.
The Riverhead Senior Center on Shade Tree Lane will be open as a cooling center until 4:30 p.m. today and will reopen tomorrow at 9 a.m.

All outdoor Riverhead Recreation Department activities and programs — except swimming lessons (in-water) and summer camp (moved indoors) — are canceled today and will be rescheduled, Supervisor Tim Hubbard said in a press release yesterday.
Heat advisories remain in effect in Nassau County, New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut. An air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the New York City metro and Lower Hudson Valley regions
No air quality health advisory is currently in effect for the Long Island region, where the air quality index is forecast to be around 90, classified as “moderate” and below the State Department of Environmental Conservation’s advisory level of 101. The pollutant of concern is ground-level ozone.
