A 70-year-old Wading River man walking on Sound Avenue early this morning died at Peconic Bay Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle shortly after 6 a.m. this morning, Riverhead town Police said in a press release this afternoon.
Police identified the victim as Douglas Sutherland. He was struck by a 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz operated by an 84-year-old man whom police did not identify. Sutherland was in the eastbound lane of Sound Avenue just east of Hulse Landing Road when the accident took place. He sustained numerous injuries, police said, and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Wading River Fire Department ambulance. He was treated at the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The Riverhead Police Department Detective Division and the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit responded to the scene of the incident to assist in the investigation, according to the report.
No criminality is suspected in the case at this time, however the investigation remains ongoing, police said. They ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have further information pertaining to the investigation to contact the Riverhead Police Department at (631)727-4500.
Sound Avenue between Hulse Landing Road and Fresh Pond Avenue was closed to traffic from the time of the accident to about 9:30 a.m. while the accident scene was under investigation. See prior story.
