Strong gusty winds and cold temperatures made for a very nippy night in Jamesport for the annual tree lighting and caroling on Dec. 5, 2024. RiverheadLOCAL/ Emil Breitenbach Jr.

Temperatures were dipping and the wind was whipping, but there was plenty of hot cocoa to warm the body and caroling to warm the spirits, as a hearty band of residents braved the elements for the Jamesport Fire Department’s tree-lighting celebration and visit with Santa Claus Thursday evening-.

The frigid air didn’t bother Santa and Mrs. Claus, who spend most of the year at the North Pole, after all, where the average temperature peaks at 32ºF — in the summertime! The couple nevertheless held court inside the warm quarters of the George Young Community Center, where kids and their parents posed for pictures and the little ones took turns whispering their Christmas wishes in Santa’s ear.
