Traffic on Route 58 was shut down in both directions between Ostrander Avenue and Oliver Street for about four hours Friday night after a two-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle.

The accident occurred just before 7 p.m. in the area of the Restaurant Depot shopping center.

The operator of the motorcycle was airlifted to Stony Brook by a Suffolk Police Medevac helicopter. Riverhead Ambulance Corps treated the operator at the scene and transported him to the Riverhead Fire Department training facility on Northville Turnpike, where firefighters secured a landing zone for the police helicopter.

Riverhead Police announced the road closure in a press release at 7:20 p.m. and at 11:30 p.m. announced the road had been reopened.

Police did not immediately make any further information available.
