Update: One person died and another sustained serious life-threatening injuries in the single-car crash this morning. See story.

A motor vehicle accident on County Road 105 in Flanders shortly after 8 a.m. this morning forced the southbound lanes of 105 closed to traffic.

The road closure at a time of peak traffic as people headed to work and schools caused traffic to back up on area roads taken by vehicles diverted from CR 105. Roads affected included East Main Street, Peconic Avenue and Roanoke Avenue. Available Riverhead Police officers and traffic control officers were dispatched to affected intersections to assist with traffic movement.

Riverhead Police asked motorists to avoid using Main Street due to heavy traffic.

One patient was transported from the scene of the crash to Stony Brook University Hospital by Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance.
