UPDATED: 5:20 p.m. – A single-car accident on County Road 105 near Flanders Road this morning claimed the life a Riverhead man and seriously injured another person, Southampton Town Police said in a press release this afternoon. 

The car was southbound on CR 105 when it crashed into a tree at shortly before 8 a.m. today. 

The driver of the car, identified by police as Robert Burgazzoli, 36, of Riverhead, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to police. His passenger survived the crash and was hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries, police said.  Police have not yet identified the passenger. They previously said the victim’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance and Flanders Fire Department responded to assist with any injuries and traffic, police said.

Southampton Town Police detectives and a New York State Police Accident Reconstruction team officers responded to investigate. 

Riverhead Police shut down the southbound lanes of CR 105 at Main Road following the crash. The road remained closed for about four hours.
