Riverhead Fire Department to host volunteer recruitment event Sunday

The Riverhead Fire Department will host a recruitment event Sunday, April 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at department headquarters, 540 Roanoke Ave., inviting community members to learn what it takes to become a volunteer firefighter.

All are welcome to stop by and speak with department members and officers about joining the all-volunteer department, training requirements, benefits and the application process, Riverhead Fire Chief Pete Kurzyna said.

The department is seeking new recruits at a time when volunteer fire departments across Long Island and New York continue to face recruitment challenges.

“Once you get the feeling of getting on that truck and helping people out, you want to respond to every call,” Kurzyna said.

To be eligible to join, applicants must be at least 18 years old, live within the Riverhead Fire District and possess a valid New York State driver’s license.

Kurzyna said there is extensive training during a new member’s first year, but the experience is valuable.

“Joining the fire service opens up a lot for your career, especially for a young person,” he said.

The department provides training, gear and equipment at no cost, according to recruitment information posted on the department website. Benefits include participation in the Length of Service Awards Program, a free gym membership, professional training and certifications, and opportunities for leadership and skill development.

The website emphasizes both the practical and personal rewards of volunteering, describing the department as a place where members gain a sense of purpose, lifelong friendships and the pride of serving their community.

Riverhead firefighters respond as volunteers when neighbors face emergencies, whether it is a fire, a medical crisis or another dangerous situation, according to the department.

Kurzyna, 36, has been a Riverhead firefighter for about 16 years.
