A Riverhead man has been charged with multiple felonies after Southampton Town police said he was involved in a 2025 crash in Flanders that left two people seriously injured.
Santiago Barreto-Gomez, 20, was arrested Thursday, July 30, following an investigation into a two-car crash that occurred March 7, 2025, at about 11 p.m. on Oak Avenue near Albany Street, Southampton Town police said.
Police said two occupants of one vehicle sustained extensive injuries in the crash, and the driver of the second vehicle attempted to flee.
Barreto-Gomez was arrested by Southampton Town detectives and the department’s Community Response Unit, with assistance from the Suffolk County Police Department Fugitive Unit, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Riverhead Town police, according to the press release.
He was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, second-degree assault, first-degree vehicular assault, second-degree vehicular assault, multiple counts of driving while intoxicated, third-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, reckless driving and vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.
He was transported to Southampton Town Police Headquarters for processing and was awaiting arraignment in Suffolk County First District Court, police said.
