More than 100 children chose from a buffet of school supplies ahead of the new school year at a 'Backpacks & Barbecue' event organized and hosted by the Butterfly Effect Project .

When school doors open and buses roll on Tuesday, students and teachers will be returning to classrooms in an environment that feels a lot more "normal" than at any time since the novel coronavirus struck New York, shuttering schools and business in the spring of 2020.

It was back to school for 5,531 Riverhead Central School District students this week, where 84% of the districts students are returning to classrooms part-time, and 16% are enrolled for virtual-only instruction.

Riverhead Schools Superintendent Dr. Aurelia Henriquez said she is looking forward to the start of a new and exciting year — her second at the helm in Riverhead. “We’re rolling out a systematic cycle for increased student achievement,” the superintendent said.

The third annual Back To School Giveaway event at Ludlam Avenue Park in Riverside drew hundreds of people Saturday morning — despite the soggy weather.

More than 400 incoming freshmen and their parents attended the high school orientation program yesterday, where they met teachers, advisers, guidance counselors and administrators.
