A majority of Long Islanders over age 50 are either currently, or have been in the past five years, or expect to be in the next five years, a caregiver for an elderly relative or friend. Good news for the new year: Help is available for people coping with this daunting, difficult job.

Next year, Peconic Bay Medical Center will open Long Island's very first caregiving center, offering counseling, educational seminars and resources to local residents caring for a loved one.

The third annual Family Caregivers' Expo and Retreat will be held in the hospital lobby Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon, providing free brunch, chair massages and personal care items alongside information about resources available to local caregivers.
