Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps paid tribute Saturday to two members who perished 20 years ago in a horrific ambulance crash on Route 25 in Aquebogue, as the ambulance rushed a cardiac patient from Jamesport to Central Suffolk Hospital.

Heidi's Helping Angels will honor RVAC paramedic Joseph Oliver and the late Thomas Lateulere at its annual fundraising dinner coming up on Oct. 6.

When their daughter Heidi, a 23-year-old Riverhead EMT, was killed in an ambulance crash in 2005, leaving behind a severely disabled infant son, June and John Behr's life was turned completely upside down. They've since learned how blessings are born of tragedy and heartache — and how paying it forward can eventually come full circle.

Ten years ago today in Riverhead, on a bright and sunny afternoon much like today, time was shocked to a standstill when the unthinkable happened.

Heidi’s Helping Angels presented letters of commendation this morning to three local teenagers who acted swiftly to save a man’s life on December 29.

A sellout crowd of more than 300 people attended the 5th Annual Heidi Behr Memorial Scholarship Fund Steak Night Thursday evening in Riverhead Polish Hall, where rescue workers Sonny Turner, Betty Harris and Howie Waldman were honored for their service to the community. (Photo slideshow.)
