Residents urged the town board to codify the already-adopted downtown pattern book into law, while parking district committee members asked the board to tap the brakes on a proposed new parking code that would mandate off-street parking or payments in lieu of parking for new residential development.

The town board at its work session today discussed two proposed five-story buildings in the downtown center district: an addition to the Suffolk Theater and a new building proposed for the former West Marine site on East Main Street.

Any development plan that has already received site plan approval would be 'grandfathered' officials said. Applications for two Main Street buildings that would add 288 apartments with only 178 parking spaces are already pending.

Residents weighed in on a plan to extend time limits in a downtown parking lot and urged the board not to settle pending litigation against the owner of a number of Wading River properties allegedly used as transient rentals.

The three-hour parking limit in the riverfront lot, which currently ends at 6 p.m. would be extended to midnight if a proposed code change becomes law.
