Riverhead Blue Waves girls basketball

More than 30 Blue Waves alumnae — including members of the championship 2012 and 1984 teams —are ready to hit the court on March 17 for the first-ever Riverhead High School girls basketball alumni day game.

Faith Johnson-DaSilva and Kim Ligon led the Riverhead Blue Waves in a fourth quarter rally to defeat North Babylon 57-53 in the first round of Suffolk’s AA girls basketball playoffs.

Riverhead played hard to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter when a three-pointer with 11 seconds left put the game away for Whitman last night at Riverhead High School.

Three years ago, Riverhead head coach Dave Spinella put three eighth-grade guards on the floor — not exactly a formula for success. But it didn't matter to him at that point.
