Riverhead school district voters will weigh in on the proposed $218.88 million 2026-2027 budget vote and choose four trustees from a field of five candidates.

The biggest drivers of spending increases in the coming year: special education, benefits, charter school tuition, Riverhead's business official said.

The roles of executive director of elementary education, director of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and director of humanities are all being cut in the 2025-2026 budget, Interim Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said.

The Riverhead Board of Education voted unanimously on Wednesday to send a $211 million budget for next school year to district voters for approval. It would increase expenditures by nearly $10 million, or roughly 5%.

The $211.4 million budget would be funded by a property tax levy of $110.1 million (a 2.16% increase and within the state cap), anticipated state aid of $86.1 million, and about $15 million in other revenues (fund balance, PILOT payments, tuition and other income).

The Riverhead Board of Education voted unanimously last night to approve a $201.4 million budget for next school year, sending a proposal that raises the tax levy to the cap and includes some controversial spending cuts to district voters for approval. 

Parents criticized the Riverhead school district for gutting the elementary dual language program and reducing instructional staff in the administration's proposed 2024-25 budget, complaining about the district’s reliance on grant funding officials knew was not permanent.
