A plan to build a new 13-store outlet center on a parcel of undeveloped land in the middle of Tanger Outlets gained preliminary approval from the Riverhead Planning Board Thursday evening.

Restaurant Depot, which plans to open its fourth Long Island warehouse in Riverhead later this year, was granted financial assistance for the Route 58 development by the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency Monday.

A 23-year-old Middle Island man was struck and killed while crossing Route 58 just west of Osborn Avenue last night, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release this morning.

The planning board will hold a public hearing Thursday on the Long Island Cauliflower Association site plan application proposing four restaurant buildings, three with drive-thru windows, on the northwest corner of Route 58 and Mill Road. One will be occupied by a Chick-fil-A, another by a Jimmy John's and Dunkin'. Tenants for the other two buildings, one of which is a 200-seat sit-down restaurant, have not been announced.
