Deep-discount Gernan grocer Lidl, which has been rapidly expanding in the U.S. since it opened its first store here in 2017, is planning a grand-opening celebration at its new Riverhead store Wednesday, June 30.

A Fine Fare supermarket will be opening in the former Best Market store on Route 58. Best Market supermarkets were purchased in 2018 by LiDL, which is opening a Riverhead location the former Toys 'R' Us site later this year.

The Best Market supermarket on Route 58 is one of 27 locations in the N.Y. metro area — including all of its 24 Long Island stores — being acquired by the Germany-based deep-discount grocer Lidl.

With the closing of Waldbaum's last month and the Riverhead King Kullen next week, only two traditional, full-service supermarkets remain in town. Is that enough?

The former Waldbaum's in Mattituck is set to reopen this morning as a Key Foods Marketplace, operated by Dan's Supreme Supermarkets.
