Southampton Town gave Riverside residents a closer look at the $44 million sewer district planned for the hamlet, including grinder pumps at each property, projected user costs and a timeline that could bring the system online in late 2029 or early 2030.

The grant allows Southampton Town to proceed with wastewater treatment system that is key to Riverside revitalization plan now taking shape.

Riverhead argues that the Riverside Sewer District should include the county facilities in Riverside, currently served by the Riverhead Town sewage treatment plant. The lawsuit filed Wednesday, accuses Southampton of violating state environmental laws and the State Constitution.

The Southampton Head Start building in Riverside, which is owned by the Town of Southampton, is not safe for occupancy due to structural damage found by contractors earlier this month. The Head Start program needs to find a new location in a hurry.

The wastewater treatment plant is essential to the implementation of the Riverside Action Plan, a revitalization plan adopted by the Southampton Town Board in 2015 and codified in a zoning overlay district that same year, that calls for high-density mixed-use development in portions of the hamlet.

The draft report by the Community Law Enforcement Review Committee presents 21 recommendations for improving police practices and police-community relations, developed over a series of more than a dozen meetings, with community input via two surveys and two listening sessions.
