Riverhead Town has reached an agreement with the New York State Historic Preservation Office to allow demolition of a historic building on East Main Street to make way for the planned town square, Supervisor Yvette Aguiar announced today.

Riverhead Town will host a virtual public meeting with Urban Design Associates on Aug. 5, to update the community on the progress of the town square project and solicit additional public input.

State historic preservation officials yesterday visited Riverhead's Main Street Historic District to discuss the town's plans to tear down the building at 117 E. Main St., which is designated as a "contributing resource" in the district.

Riverhead Town has hired the nonprofit National Development Council for technical assistance on three projects, including a transit-oriented development project planned for the Court Street parking lot, the development of a the Main Street town square and the potential lease of the former Kmart building for a municipal complex.

Riverhead Town has put out a second online survey looking for community input for the design of the new town square on East Main Street. The survey is available until July 2.

Riverhead buys three East Main Street buildings for $4.85 million, with plans to demolish two vacant buildings and renovate and expand the third.
