Riverhead buys three East Main Street buildings for $4.85 million, with plans to demolish two vacant buildings and renovate and expand the third.

Riverhead is holding a virtual public meeting Thursday evening, April 15 to gain input and insights for the proposed town square on East Main Street.

The town plans to demolish two vacant buildings to create a green space connecting Main Street to the Peconic Riverfront across from the Suffolk Theater. Here's your chance to weigh in on what the town square should be like.

The town is asking for input in an online survey and on an interactive map. It is also hosting its first Zoom meeting about the town square on April 1 at 6 p.m.

The town board on Tuesday authorized the purchase of two East Main Street buildings and a six-month option on a third, for the creation of a town square to connect Main Street to the riverfront. It also authorized borrowing of $5.5 million for the project.

Also on today's agenda: a do-over of a hearing held in October on a plan to build a four-story apartment building at 331 East Main Street, because the town neglected to notify the Town of Southampton of the application as required by state law.

The town has negotiated the purchase of 117 East Main Street, and 121 East Main Street and a six-month option to purchase 127 East Main Street, according to a resolution to be taken up at Tuesday's Community Development Agency meeting.
