A Riverhead man was impaired by drugs when he crashed his car and fled the scene on County Road 48 Friday night, only to lose control and crash into a tree on Main Street in Greenport.
Police said Brandon Coscia, 24, was charged with DWI/impaired by drugs, aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree and leaving the scene.
Coscia was operating 2012 Honda at a high rate of speed eastbound on Route 48, Friday evening at about 8 p.m., Southold Town Police said in a press release issued Sunday night. He struck a vehicle he attempted to pass at the intersection of Route 48 and Chapel Lane, according to police. Coscia left the scene and continued east on Route 48, attempted to turn onto Main Street but failed to properly negotiate the turn and struck a tree, police said.
Coscia was found to be operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs, according to the report.
He was arrested, transported to Suothold police headquartered, processed and held for arraignment.
