Quick action by Riverhead police stopped a fire at an East Main Street apartment Thursday night.

Police responded to an apartment fire at the 821 East Main Street apartment complex at about 7:38 p.m. The first officer on the scene made entry into the apartment where the fire was located and, with the help of a resident there, extinguished the fire located in a bedroom, according to a Riverhead Police Department press release.  Other officers helped evacuate the apartment and adjacent apartments, the release said. 

The fire caused minor damage to the apartment, and no injuries were reported, police said.

The Riverhead Fire Department and Town of Riverhead Fire Marshal’s Office responded to further assist and investigate, the police said.

The fire was determined to be accidental and electrical in nature, police said.
