A Patchogue man has been charged with Robbery in the First Degree in the holdup last week of Shah’s Halal Food on Route 58 in Riverhead, police said in a press release this afternoon.
Craig Cherney, 35, was arrested after an extensive investigation by the Riverhead Police Department Detective Division, according to the press release.
An employee of the halal restaurant called 911 on April 24 to report being held up by a man brandishing a handgun who entered the store at about 10:30 p.m. and demanded money.
Robbery in the First Degree is a class B felony. If convicted, Cherney faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence. He was previously convicted of Robbery in the First Degree, Robbery in the Third Degree and Attempted Robbery in the First Degree and was released on parole in September 2019, according to N.Y. State Department of Corrections online records.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
