Former Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller was elected to the board of commissioners of the Wading River Fire District this week, unseating incumbent commissioner Terrence Culhane.
Hegermiller defeated Culhane by a vote of 149 to 104 in Tuesday’s vote.
Wading River was one of three fire district commissioners races in the Town of Riverhead with more than one person seeking election to an open seat.
In the Manorville Fire District, William Costello defeated Michael W. Vetack, 234-171.
Jamesport Fire District saw a write-in candidate mount an unsuccessful challenge to an incumbent seeking re-election. Challenger Nathan Eddington garnered 40 write-in votes, and was defeated by incumbent commissioner John Newman, who had 53 votes. Another write-in vote went to former commissioner Chuck Thomas.
Also in Jamesport, a ballot proposition to enhance the length of service award program was approved by voters, 85-5.
In the Riverhead Fire District, Commissioner Ed Carey was re-elected unopposed.
In Flanders, Commissioner Dave Dougherty was elected to a five-year term, unopposed, and Commissioner Mike Spano was elected to a two-year term, also unopposed. Eric Bilka was elected to a one-year term.
