Wading River Fire District

Former Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller was elected to the board of commissioners of the Wading River Fire District this week, unseating incumbent commissioner Terrence Culhane. 

The Riverhead Town Board will decide Tuesday whether to exempt the construction of a commercial communications tower at Wading River Fire Department headquarters from its local zoning laws.

Residents near the fire department headquarters told the Town Board they are worried about safety, health and aesthetic impacts of a proposed 190-foot tower.

In anticipation of heavy use of the ice rink facility and Scott's Pointe water park in Calverton, Council Member Ken Rothwell invited emergency services agencies that serve the area to discuss plans to ensure fast response times for calls.

Voters will elect commissioners in local fire districts tomorrow, where races in Jamesport, Wading River and Manorville are contested.

Wading River Fire District voters for the second time in four years have rejected plans put forward by district commissioners to repair, upgrade and expand fire district facilities. Elections for two commissioners resulted in one race being too close to call.

An incumbent was unseated in the Wading River Fire District election for the second straight year, as Tom Colitti defeated Jim Meier by two votes in yesterday's election. In Manorville, Dennis Hendrickson won election to an open seat, besting Craig Lindahl by a vote of 154 to 108.
