Giglio voices concerns about North Fork pipeline

To the Editor:

I have written to the Suffolk County Water Authority to express concerns I have regarding the North Fork pipeline project, emphasizing the following issues:

Traffic and Roadway Impacts: The proposed construction area involves a narrow roadway with only one lane in each direction and minimal shoulders. This poses a significant concern regarding construction staging, equipment movement, and general disruption to local traffic. These impacts are particularly acute during peak travel hours and periods of inclement weather when roadway flooding is already a problem.

Road Restoration and Bonding: I urge that bonding requirements be established to ensure that the Town of Riverhead is not held financially responsible if road restoration is not performed to town standards following construction. Proper accountability is critical to protecting town infrastructure and taxpayer resources.

Impact on the Community: Any road closures or detours must be clearly communicated and carefully planned to minimize disruption for residents who depend on this route daily—to commute to work, bring children to and from summer activities, and access essential services.

Construction Timeline: I urge that construction schedules be planned to avoid the peak agritourism season, when traffic volume on these roads increases substantially. Delays or poorly timed work could cause serious congestion and negatively impact the local economy and quality of life.

Permits and Easements: Lastly, it is essential that all necessary permits from the Town of Riverhead be secured in advance and that appropriate easements are obtained to ensure the legal and safe execution of the project.

I appreciate SCWA’s continued efforts to balance the infrastructure needs of the region with the protection of our environment and the daily lives of North Fork residents.
