To the Editor:
On Tuesday, Jan. 6, we lost another 9/11 first responder, Sgt. Michael L. Piro. His passing brought to light the selfless acts of true angels living among us, namely: Trooper Kristoffer Fried of the New York State Troopers Employee Assistance Program, Karen and Mark Heppner of McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home, Father Maks of St. Isidore’s Church, and Danielle Sessa of the Birchwood of Polish Town. Together, as a well-oiled machine, they handled all of the intricate logistics and accounted for the minutiae in every detail that gave our hero a memorable and fitting final sendoff.
To everyone who took the time out of their schedules to pay their respect: Thank you. Your love has made a difference. To the sea of State Troopers that stood at attention and filled St. Isidore’s Church: You embody the qualities that Sgt. Piro lived every day. To the countless law enforcement officers that worked to ensure our time of grief was safe and intimate: We appreciate you. To everyone else that were not mentioned by name: You know who you are, and our family is forever humbled by your support.
