‘Long, drawn-out storm’ dumps about 4 inches of snow in Riverhead: highway supt.

Local roads are in good shape Monday morning after “a long, drawn-out storm” that came in three phases and had town highway crews out from 8 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday morning, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

The town had a total of about four inches of snow accumulations, Zaleski said. 

“Traffic was light allowing us to do the best we could with the long drawn out storm,” he said. “Everything was plowed and salt sanded at least twice.”

The freezing temperatures forecast over the next few days can cause icy conditions in spots, Zaleski said. “Drive carefully.”

“The guys did great and I’d like to thank them for their persistent effort,” the highway chef said. 

Slick roads resulted in at least three rollover crashes in Riverhead Town Sunday, according to fire and rescue reports. Suffolk Police in a post on X yesterday reported dozens of accidents across the county.

A overturn crash on Sound Avenue Sunday morning required Jamesport Fire Department to respond with a heavy rescue unit to extricate the driver of an SUV that landed on its side with a snapped utility pole on top of the vehicle, according to a Jamesport Fire Department post on Facebook.
