The Riverhead High School boys cross country team captured its first league championship in 13 years, finishing the league season undefeated.
Cross country head coach Tyler Lobenhofer credited the Blue Waves’ success to the runners’ training and commitment to each other.
“This is a really special group of young men who have put in countless hours of training,” Lobenhofer said. “They made sacrifices, committed to one another, and worked incredibly hard to make this happen.”
The championship follows recent years in which Riverhead runners have earned all-league honors and delivered record-breaking performances, according to the district’s announcement.
“Our student-athletes work diligently to represent Riverhead with pride,” Lobenhofer said. “We thank the entire school community for its continued support of our team.”
The team finished 5-0-0 at the top of League II, with its last victory coming Oct. 20 at Indian Island County Park, where it defeated Patchogue-Medford.
While this is the team’s first league championship in over a decade, the Riverhead High School cross country program has cultivated exceptional talent in recent years, with numerous record-breaking performances and all-league honors.
