Coastal flood warning

A winter storm the National Weather Service is now calling “potentially historic” is forecast to drop 16-24 inches of snow across the region, with moderate to locally major coastal flooding and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

Strong, gusty winds and rain are expected to continue through Monday afternoon. No major damage has been reported so far, as winds take down some trees, branches and wires.

As Hurricane Erin passes Long Island well offshore, its impacts will be felt locally with widespread coastal flooding across the East End, especially along the Peconic River and near Orient Point and life-threatening rip currents and high surf along the south shore.
