A heat advisory is in effect for Suffolk and Nassau counties from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 100, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
The advisory covers northeast Suffolk, northwest Suffolk, southeast Suffolk and southwest Suffolk, as well as northern and southern Nassau.
Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 90 and heat index values as high as 95 in Riverhead and the surrounding area, with west winds around 5 to 9 mph, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Forecasters said humidity should gradually lower into early next week as drier air mixes down on a westerly flow, though temperatures are expected to remain above normal.
Hot temperatures combined with high humidity can lead to heat illnesses, the weather service said. Seniors and people with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at increased risk, and homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
The weather service recommends using air conditioning to stay cool at home or going to a place that has air conditioning. Residents are urged to check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.
For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.
Looking ahead, the next chance for showers and thunderstorms returns Monday afternoon and evening, with additional chances possible at times through midweek, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion.
