An air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone is in effect for the Long Island and Metro New York regions Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Air Quality Index is forecast to reach 101, which is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including people with cardiovascular disease and those who have respiratory disease (such as asthma), young children and the elderly.
The Riverhead Senior Center at 60 Shade Tree Lane will be open as a cooling center Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There is a chance of severe weather Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service said there is a scattered severe thunderstorm threat across the region Friday afternoon and evening. The primary threat is damaging wind gusts. Localized flash flooding is possible, the weather service said. The threat of severe weather across the East End and in southeast Brookhaven Town is currently classified as “marginal,” according to the National Weather Service in New York. The risk is a bit higher in western Suffolk, Nassau, New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut.
