NOAA forecast models predict 6 to 10 Atlantic hurricanes this season, including 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5, with winds of 111 mph or higher.)

After an outcry from elected officials and commercial fishermen, the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has backed off the plan announced last month to abruptly close down the commercial bluefish fishery.

NOAA is warning boaters to be on the lookout for humpback whales in the Long Island Sound. Collisions can be dangerous to boaters and whales alike. The giant marine mammal can be 60 feet long and weigh 40 tons. It is federally protected and injuring, interacting with or harassing it is punishable by stiff fines.
