The plan, calling for additional estimated expenditures of more than $15 million over the next 10 years, is seen as a crucial commitment to retaining the Riverhead Water District as an independent public water supplier.

With another period of hot, dry weather forecast, Riverhead Water District is at risk for not being able to meet demand, due to a sharp spike in water consumption — as much as 80 percent — for irrigation.

Irrigation stresses the capacity of the Riverhead Water District to the max and has required the construction of multimillion dollar well sites to keep up with the peak demand of summer. The town is asking customers to voluntarily follow an odd-even day program.

Water service has been restored to all customers affected by this morning’s water main break in Wading River, the Riverhead Water District announced this afternoon.

A downed and arcing power line on Wading River-Manor Road caused a water main to break, leaving a large area in Wading River without water or power this morning. The break turned North Country Road into a river.

The flushing will continue for three weeks. All water district customers are advised to check their water before use, including before doing laundry, during this period.

Griffing Avenue is closed to traffic between Main and Second streets due to Riverhead Water District contractors installing a water line for a new business and apartments on Griffing Avenue.

The Riverhead Water District's annual spring flushing will begin Sunday evening and continue for about three weeks. The water district advises customers to let their water run before using while the district flushes its mains.

The cost of the improvements — existing main extensions to increase capacity, two emergency generators and a 2-million-gallon ground storage tank — would be bonded.
