Turning food scraps into fertilizer: Riverhead launches pilot program in partnership with residents and businesses
Riverhead Town is conducting a pilot food scrap collection program, with the goals of providing material for composting to local farms and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change.
Things took place at the town dump many years before the reclamation project got underway — at the direction of some in Town Hall — that surprised town officials years later. And it had nothing to do with aliens or artifacts.
A draft solid waste management plan being considered by the town board calls for increased compliance with existing recycling rules, recycling food wastes and implementing commercial sanitation districts in some areas of town.
