The Suffolk County Water Authority is moving ahead with plans for a new water main through the Riverhead Town to deliver drinking water to its customers in Southold. The revised route along Sound Avenue concerns Riverhead officials worried about traffic on the high-volume road.

The water authority, as lead agency, determined that the project is likely to have adverse environmental impacts and should be the subject of an environmental impact statement to identify those impacts and develop ways in which to mitigate them.

It was a sight to behold. And one that was a long time coming. Suffolk County Water Authority contractors who are installing mains that will carry clean drinking water to homes in a remote section of Manorville crossed into Riverhead Town from Brookhaven yesterday.

The funding, received by the county from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, will cover a more than $600,000 funding shortfall for the construction of the water mains in the Manorville hamlet, as well as the cost of the private service line for each of the 64 homes in the extension area.

A community information meeting on the status of a public water extension to serve homes in the Manorville area will take place on Wednesday, March 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Manorville Fire Department, according to an announcement by the water authority.
