A vehicle crashed into the former Edwards Sports Center building this morning at about 10:15.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle appeared to have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, according to police at the scene.
The man was unconscious but breathing, according to radio reports.
The vehicle, a sedan, was apparently eastbound on Route 58 when it entered the parking lot and crashed through the door and wall of the now-vacant building at the intersection of Route 58 and East Main Street. No one was in the building at the time.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene and called for a Suffolk County Police helicopter to transport the patient to Stony Brook University Hospital.
It is not known if the man suffered any injuries in the crash.
Riverhead Fire Department responded to secure a landing zone for the helicopter at the fire department’s training facility on Northville Turnpike.
Riverhead Police are investigating the accident.
