Riverhead High School assistant principal Michael Hugelmeyer has published his first book. Co-written with Amy Benjamin, the book is titled Big Skills for the Common Core: Literacy Strategies for the 6-12 Classroom. According to the promotional material, “Big Skills is packed with engaging strategies teachers can use immediately to improve their students’ literacy skills with real teaching examples” from RHS classrooms.
Hugelmeyer, who is in his 10th year as an educator, came to RHS in 2008 as the Dean of Students and then became an Assistant Principal at Riverhead High School the following year. Prior to coming to Riverhead, he was a social studies teacher and track coach at Glen Cove High School. Benjamin, a veteran English teacher, has been a consultant to our schools, training teachers in techniques for writing across the curriculum, strategic literacy, and differentiated instruction.
Hugelmeyer has been married for seven years to Alexis Hugelmeyer, a family practice physician in Riverhead. The Hugelmeyers have two children, Lance, 2, and Isabella, 5. They live in Baiting Hollow.
