PBMC Health on Friday celebrated the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the institution: a $5 million donation from the Louis Feil Lead Annuity Trust.
In recognition of the gift, PBMC Health’s new Manorville campus will be named The Gertrude and Louis Feil Campus for Ambulatory Care.
The new 25,000-square-foot campus will have a mix of medical offices in three separate buildings, said PBMC president and CEO Andrew Mitchell. The first offices should be ready for opening before Memorial Day, he said.
“This is part of the transformation of health care delivery into a large, integrated ambulatory medicine program,” Mitchell said in an interview following dedication ceremonies.
The Manorville community needs to be better served, Mitchell said, and Peconic Bay has an obligation to that community.
The first building in the new Gertrude and Louis Feil Campus for Ambulatory Care will include a primary/family care office, an ob/gyn practice, pediatrics and an urgent care center, Mitchell said.
Today’s ceremonies were held in the atrium lobby of the Kanas Center for Advanced Surgery, where PBMC benefactor John Kanas, former CEO of North Fork Bank, and a longtime friend of donor Jeffrey Feil and his wife Lee, thanked the donors for their generosity.
Kanas, whose philanthropy made possible the construction of the Kanas Center for Advanced Surgery, said he brought Feil to PBMC to tour the facility last summer.
Kanas joked that “usually when you try to shake down somebody for this kind of money it takes a long time, you’ve got to take them out, play golf… But I asked him once,” Kanas said, “and two weeks later Andy got a letter from the foundation telling him the Feil family would be stepping up to the plate.”
“I thank God for blessing you with the resources that you have,” Kanas told the Feils, and I thank him for blessing us with you.”
The sign at the new ambulatory center was unveiled today by way of a live audio/video feed from the Manorville site, to the delight of those gathered in the Riverhead atrium.
PBMC is not relocating any of its existing offices to the Manorville campus, according to Mitchell, who told RiverheadLOCAL last July the new site “is purely an expansion.”
PBMC Health is leasing the site from developer Park Ridge Development of Ronkonkoma. Principal Charles Mancini was on hand today for the ceremony, as was Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine, who presented the Feils with a proclamation to thank them for their generosity.
PBMC Health is an umbrella organization formed last year by the Riverhead-based medical center that includes the hospital, Peconic Bay Home Care, Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, and a large number of physician practices.
