2013 0821 Ferguson Nancy

Former Riverhead resident Nancy Elizabeth Ferguson died on August 15, 2013 in Bay City, Mich. She was 83 years old.

She was born on June 5, 1930 in Riverhead, N.Y. to the late Walter H. and Dorothy (Raynor) Sanford. She married Robert J. Ferguson, M.D. on April 25, 1959 in Ann Arbor, MI.

Nancy was a 1948 graduate of Riverhead High School. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College of Nursing. She worked in public health, staff and administrative nursing and as an instructor of Medical-Surgical Nursing at The University of Michigan. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder and was a member of its Hearts and Hands Knitting Club. Other memberships include: the Bay City Garden Club, Sadie Toeppner Garden Club and Bay County Medical Society Alliance (past president). She delivered Mobile Meals, was a volunteer at the Helen M. Nickless Clinic and served on the board of Crimestoppers.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by her children: Colin R. Ferguson and friend Stephen Winn, Dr. Heather (Steven Connell) Ferguson, Colonel Robyn (Lt. Colonel Kevin) Wolfla, and Dr. Cristin (Victor) Hannak, her grandchildren: Francis R. and Laurel E. Wolfla, and Cameron Hannak, and her siblings: Shirley (John) Braun and Bruce (Janet) Sanford and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Matthew W. Schramm officiated. Private burial took place at Elm Lawn Cemetery. Visiting hours were Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Helen M. Nickless Clinic or the American Heart Association.
