A bulldozer fire drew Riverhead and Jamesport Fire Departments to the Riverhead Highway Department sand mine on Manor Lane in Jamesport this morning.

A Dresser Dozer was removing sand from the mine around 9:45 this morning. Its operator had stopped to get a cup of coffee when he noticed the machine was smoking.

Jamesport Fire Department requested mutual aid from Riverhead Fire Department when it was having trouble reaching the bulldozer, which was in the sand mine. Riverhead responded to the scene with its brush truck, which was able to navigate the sand mine to get to the fire.

The highway department began excavating sand from the site earlier this month.

The fire was under control as of 10:30 a.m. according to radio reports.
