Sweet Tart, the new frozen yogurt shop on East Main Street, is officially celebrating its grand opening this weekend with specials and giveaways.
Town officials were on hand at noon today for the ribbon-cutting. Tomorrow, the first 30 children in the shop will get a free gift bag with goodies including a voucher for a free fro-yo. On Sunday, to celebrate Mother’s Day, all moms will get a free frozen yogurt. And all weekend long, every customer will be entered into a free raffle for an iPad Mini.
The fro-yo shop opened its doors on Feb. 27, said James Foster, who owns the shop with his wife Miyoshi Cambra. Both are Riverhead locals and Riverhead High School graduates (Class of 1994).
Business has been good, and it’s great to be part of the renewal of the Main Street business district that they both recall as a bustling commercial corridor, the couple say.
“Riverhead is very popular with young people,” Cambra said.
“And that’s exactly what we need more of downtown,” Supervisor Sean Walter responded, adding that another 48-unit apartment building was in the works. He was referring to Peconic Crossing, which is in contract to buy the site of the L.I. Science Center on West Main Street and plans to build a five-story apartment building on the site.
“That will bring more foot traffic to Main Street,” Councilman John Dunleavy said.
Sweet Tart offers regular, low-fat and no-fat frozen yogurt as well as sugar-free varieties. The toppings bar includes everything from fruit to nuts, including a lot of different candy toppings. It’s all self-serve.
There’s fresh Greek yogurt for sale too.
“My favorite is the low-fat chocolate pretzel,” Councilwoman Jodi Giglio said. After the ribbon was snipped, she treated herself a “$5 fill-up” special that was offered today until 2. “Good stuff,” she said.
Dunleavy bought himself a treat as well. “It was delicious,” he said — though he mistook Skittles for M&Ms and “wasn’t crazy about them.”

Foster and Cambra knew each other in school but never dated. “She had a crush on me in 6th grade and used to chase me around. Then 15 years later, I was the one chasing her.” They’ve been married 12 years and still enjoy working together 24/7, Foster says laughing. “And we’re still madly in love.”
It’s proof that fro-yo is, among other things, good for your love life.
