A man who police said was on New York State parole for burglary was arrested Thursday and charged in connection with a break-in at Riverhead Multi-Service on West Main Street, according to a Riverhead Police Department media release.

On April 30, 2026, at about 4:55 a.m., a male suspect broke into the Riverhead Multi-Service facility at 74 West Main Street in Riverhead, police said. Responding patrol officers determined the suspect removed U.S. currency before fleeing the area, according to police.

The Riverhead Police Detective Division responded and continued the investigation, police said. At about 3:51 p.m. the same day, detectives arrested Richard Ambrose, 49, who police said was residing at Community Housing Innovations, 629 West Main Street, Riverhead.

Ambrose was charged with third-degree burglary under New York State Penal Law 140.20 and is being held for arraignment, police said.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
