The community turned out for the Jamesport Fire Department’s annual tree-lighting ceremony and visit with Santa last night at the George C. Young Community Center in Jamesport.
Three newly planted Norway spruces were lit with colorful Christmas lights for the first time last night. The spruces, donated by John Sipala of Whitman Nurseries, were planted last week by Jamesport landscape contractor and nursery owner Tom Stapon and Riverhead Councilman George Gabrielsen.
Children from Aquebogue Elementary School sang carols inside the gazebo before Santa arrived for an audience with kids inside the community center where refreshments were served by volunteers.
The event was originally set for Tuesday evening, but was postponed by rain. Last night was dry and relatively mild.
