(Updated) A Riverhead man was airlifted to Stony Brook and a Baiting Hollow woman and her daughter were sent to Peconic Bay Medical Center following a high-speed, head-on crash on Sound Avenue in Wading River this morning.
Thomas Jaeger was driving a 2003 Ford Escape eastbound on Sound Avenue, west of Fresh Pond Avenue, at about 11:25 a.m. when he crossed the double yellow line, drove into the westbound lane and crashed head-on into a westbound 2o14 Nissan Sentra operated by Gail Brunner this morning, according to Riverhead Town Police.
Jaeger, 55 , was extricated from his vehicle by Wading River Fire Department and airlifted to Stony Brook with serious injuries, police said.
Brunner, 44, and her 16-year-old daughter Kristen, who was a front-seat passenger in the Nissan, were taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of injuries police said were not life-threatening.
The road was closed until approximately 4:20 p.m.while detectives and a N.Y. State Police accident reconstruction team investigated the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
