Rain this morning with the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy downpours have forced the cancellation of Riverhead’s annual Memorial Day parade this year.
The parade, scheduled to step off at 10 a.m., and all ceremonies at the various monuments along the parade route, have been called off, said Mike Pankowski of the Riverhead American Legion Post, which hosts the annual event with the Riverhead VFW Post.
Southold Town canceled its annual parade as of Saturday evening after monitoring the forecast all day Saturday, Southold Supervisor Scott Russell said.
Parades in Orient and Mattituck were also canceled.
Abbreviated ceremonies will still go on at Calverton National Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. today, Pankowski said.
A flood advisory is in effect for Long Island and Connecticut, as the storm called Bonnie, now a tropical depression moves up the Atlantic coast. Up to an inch of rain has already fallen on the island, according to the National Weather Service in Upton. Another one to two inches of rain is expected. Minor flooding in urban and poor drainage areas is expected, the weather service says.
