(Updated: 10:30 a.m.) A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck on Route 58 near Applebee’s late last night, Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said this morning.

A 47-year-old Levittown woman was attempting to cross Route 58 at Kroemer Avenue, N.Y. State Police Lt. Chris Casale said this morning.  April L. Valera entered the roadway from the north side near Applebee’s and was struck by a westbound pickup truck driven by a Riverhead man, according to police. The pickup truck, which was traveling in the left lane, had a green light, Casale said. The driver stayed on the scene and attempted to render aid to the victim before EMS arrived, he said. No charged were filed and there is no suspected criminality, Casale said. New York State Police are handling the accident investigation.

Route 58 was closed to traffic in both directions for several hours overnight following the accident, which occurred at around 11:30 p.m.

State Police are requesting that any witnesses that may have observed the collision contact the State Police at (631) 756-3300.
