A four-session, Coast Guard-approved boating course is being offered by Peconic Bay Power Squadron, Eastern Long Island’s local unit of the United States Power Squadrons, next month.

The “America’s Boating Course” will be held at Hampton Bays Senior Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue, Hampton Bays on four Tuesdays in February (6,13, 20 and 27) at 7 p.m.

America’s Boating Course is approved by New York State for compliance with the state boater education law, which requires all operators of mechanically propelled vessels in N.Y. Waters born on or after May 1, 1996 to have a boating safety certificate. The course, which provides essential information for new boaters, is also a great brush-up for experienced boaters.

Material presented will cover boating law, safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, boating emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering and much more.

Students must be at least 10 years of age on or before Feb. 27 to register for the class.

Attendees will receive a 244-page America’s Boating Course manual and a companion CD and, after passing an exam, a completion certificate. Many insurance companies offer discounts to boaters who earn their completion certificate.

The $50 fee covers the cost of the manual and CD and all four sessions.
